Sinners and Saints

Sometimes you get to try some new thoughts out with a new shirt. This new one for Ranger Up was a different approach for me. Taking a type driven design based around a saying and building it into a design is always tough. But sometimes you see the right inspiration here and there, find bits and pieces that make sense. And build something new with the parts. Sinners and Saints comes from the idea that you can be both in your lifetime. When you are military, you’re essentially both at the same time. A savior to some and a sinner while you perform the action necessary. There’s something nice and old school about this one. The typeface, the scroll work and small additions. I’m looking forward to rocking it.

Strength & Honor Fund

stickerdesignwebpreviewMy boxer Leonidas was recently diagnosed with lymphoma (a form of cancer) and in an effort to raise some funds to help pay for his treatments, I’ve decided to put some of my design skills to the test and create a fundraising project that will go directly to paying his medical bills.

photo123Leonidas is a 6 year old boxer who is still a puppy at heart.  He’s a charmer in every way who loves to be around dogs as well as people and he’s been with us since he was just 7 weeks old.  When we finally decided on getting a dog for the house, I had just recently left the military and was still dealing with a lot of stress and depression from combat.  The decision to bring Leonidas into our home was one of the greatest we’ve ever made.  He helped me through so many rough times, just simply by being there and aware of the pain my wife and I would be going through.  He has given us everything he could offer and I owe it to him to give him everything I can back.

393981_4909425538345_2069636702_nWhen we chose the name we had no idea how appropriate it would be for him some day.  ‘Leo’ has always been a caring and strong dog.  The protector of our younger dog Molly (a 5 year old pitbull) and the a teacher to our newest dog Titan (a one year old bull mastiff).  And through the beginnings of his treatment he has been far stronger and more resilient than I can honestly say I have been.

When we received the news we were devastated.  In the last two weeks, we’ve come to realize that he doesn’t feel any different about his lot in life and that we shouldn’t treat him as such.  In the last two weeks I’ve seen the strength that burns in him and the honorable way he meets any new challenge.

In keeping with that code, we refuse to simply ask for a handout from our friends and family, but to work and make something that people will want to be a part of.  Something that they will keep.  And something that they will ultimately remember.

PatchDesignRoundedLargeWebTo kick things off with what I’m calling the ‘Strength & Honor Fund’, I have designed a military style patch that you can see the preview of above.  This will be a high end, PVC patch with a velcro backing.  The message is simple and the design is strong.  It is your shield that stands with Leonidas against the tide of cancer.

Right now the patches aren’t being produced, but I’m opening the donations as a sort of pre-order for anyone who wants to get involved.  Once we reach the cost for production, I will be ordering them immediately.

These patches are going for $8 per patch.  However I’m leaving the donations up to the purchaser.  For every $8 I will send another patch.  When the patches arrive, I will send them out!

This first batch will be for 100 patches, but if we meet that number quickly, I’ll obviously order more than that!  All funds for this project go directly to Leo’s medical bills and any excess funds will be donated to Hero Dogs, Inc.  A non-profit that trains and places service dogs with wounded veterans at no cost to the service member.

If you are interested in donating, follow the link below.  Any donation is appreciated and welcome.  Again, for every $8 you will be sent a patch so be sure to include name and address!

War Decor

You can’t go far into a Bed Bath and Beyond, a consignment shop or anywhere on Pinterest without seeing them.  Homely saying based around love, life and happiness for the domestic setting.  They’re simple, direct and strangely compelling to look at.  Over the last few months I’ve had an idea brewing for a different breed of word based decor, a design project for the military household and for the service member.  Something I’ve come to call “War Decor”.

5596253_6257446-plwfr2_bFeeling emboldened by my Deployed series pillows, I’ve been looking for a new direction to move with decorations.  As a result I’ve been putting together a collection of prints, shirts and pillows that draws from mottos, sayings, unit slogans and quips from everyday military life.

5634676_9308880-tsrmw127_bWith so many units and sayings to draw from, this series is only getting started.  At the moment, the focus is Army and Marines, but I’m fully intending to dive into Navy and Air Force in the near future as well (my Wife being Navy and my brother in law being Air Force!).  But even the military historian/enthusiast will be able to find a little something in this collection as I have been diving into US military history with famous quotes from leaders like General Patton and Major Winters.

5599248_2831809-frm118bl01_bI’m really excited to have this project up and running, and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.  Be sure to head over to the shop on society6 and check out the rest of the work posted there!  In the mean time, I’ll be knee deep into collecting more sayings and mottos for future designs!  If you have suggestions, be sure to leave a comment or shoot me an email!
